Fulfilling vision 2100

Our activities are uniquely long term. After several decades of fully dismantling the nuclear power plant that operated in Lithuania, the work will not end; therefore, our activity vision extends to the year 2100.

We must now ensure the management and storage of radioactive waste generated during nuclear energy production, as long-lived radioactive waste remains hazardous for up to 10,000 years. For this purpose, we are creating new nuclear energy facility infrastructure – constructing surface repositories for low and intermediate-level radioactive waste storage for periods from 100 to 300 years, and by 2070, at a depth of several hundred metres, we will build a special engineered facility – a deep repository for long-lived radioactive waste, the operation of which will be our responsibility.

After the complete dismantling of the nuclear power plant, a so-called green meadow will remain in its place. This area released to the public may become a platform for future projects that meet economic, technological and other societal needs.

Perhaps a new nuclear energy cycle will begin on the former power plant site, and a new generation nuclear power plant will be constructed there. Or some of the remaining plant infrastructure may become an amusement park, sports complex, tourist area or drone arena – everything depends on societal needs.

In any case, Lithuania will remain a nuclear energy state as long as all long-lived radioactive waste in the country becomes harmless to the environment, which will take not hundreds but thousands of years.
