Radioactive Waste Management

One of our main tasks is the safe management of all radioactive waste located in and generated within the territory of Lithuania. In doing so, we aim to ensure that future generations do not inherit an unjustified burden of radioactive waste management.

Although the nuclear power plant reactors were shut down more than 15 years ago, radioactive waste continues to be generated and will continue to be generated until decommissioning of the plant is completed.

We estimate that the total amount of equipment to be dismantled and related materials is about 180,000 tons, of which nearly 90% is contaminated with radionuclides. A large part of the generated waste is decontaminated and returned to the market as secondary raw materials (the target is to decontaminate and return 75% of the plant’s equipment materials). However, the remaining part must be packaged and placed in special repositories. We ensure that all radioactive waste is managed as safely, responsibly, and efficiently as possible.

Radioactive waste management service

All radioactive waste is our responsibility. Radioactive waste accumulates not only at the nuclear power plant – although in incomparably smaller quantities, it is also generated in the medical and industrial sectors. Despite the small quantities, their management is particularly important to ensure environmental and public safety.

We provide professional radioactive waste management services and ensure the safe collection and transportation of such waste to the Enterprise’s radioactive waste management facilities, where it is properly treated.

One of the largest projects involving the management of radioactive waste generated outside the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is the management of industrial, medical and other waste stored at the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility. All radioactive waste from this storage facility has already been transported to the Enterprise’s facilities in Visaginas, where it continues to be processed and will ultimately be placed in the appropriate repositories.
