“Altra” Partners Visit Lithuania to Assess Opportunities for Advanced Small Modular Reactor Deployment

International partners of “Altra” are visiting Lithuania today. Representatives of the Polish company SGE are taking part in the ongoing assessment of advanced Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology in Lithuania. The visit marks the first meeting of the partners in Lithuania since the trilateral Memorandum of Understanding was signed in Washington, D.C., in February this year.

During the visit, the delegation will tour Lithuania’s former nuclear power plant, where they will become acquainted with the existing infrastructure, technical expertise, and nuclear safety practices. The partners will also discuss the next stages of cooperation and the progress of the planned assessment of advanced nuclear technologies.

The following day, the delegation is scheduled to meet with specialists from the State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) and the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania. The meetings will focus on Lithuania’s regulatory framework, licensing processes, and the conditions necessary for the potential deployment of this technology in the country.

Direct dialogue enables a more comprehensive assessment of both technological and regulatory aspects, helping to ensure that future decisions are based on thorough analysis,” said Viktorija Krutulytė, Project Manager at the Infrastructure Development Projects Division of “Altra”.

On 25 February 2026 in Washington, D.C., Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, operating under the “Altra” brand, signed a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy of the United States and the Polish company SGE. The memorandum provides for an assessment of the potential deployment of the advanced BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology in Lithuania.

The Memorandum establishes the framework for evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of the project. The assessment covers technological solutions, nuclear safety and licensing requirements, as well as economic and market considerations.

The BWRX-300 is an advanced boiling water Small Modular Reactor designed as a carbon-free electricity generation solution. The technology is based on a simplified and standardized design intended to optimize costs and shorten construction timelines while maintaining the highest nuclear safety standards.

This cooperation is taking place within the broader context of Europe’s energy transition, which aims to strengthen energy security, ensure reliable electricity generation, and achieve climate neutrality objectives. The assessment of Small Modular Reactor technologies is also aligned with Lithuania’s strategic goal of becoming an energy-independent and climate-neutral country by 2050.
