A small fire contained at INPP primary waste treatment facility: no radiation hazard
On November 25, a small fire broke out at the primary radioactive waste processing complex of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INP). The situation is fully controlled and stable – the fire did not spread and there is no danger to the public. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 16:40; the fire was localized at 17:05 and fully extinguished at 19:07. No injuries were reported.
There is no radiation hazard to people or the environment. Radiation background measurements taken on site show that all indicators remain within established limits. No release of radioactive materials into the environment has been detected, and there is no spread of contamination. Routine technological operations have been temporarily suspended until additional inspections are completed.
A thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident. Once identified, operations will resume with additional safety measures in place.
The incident occurred within the secured territory of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, in a separate radioactive waste management facility (Building 130), located more than 250 metres from the main reactor units. This facility is responsible for the primary decontamination of Class A very low-level radioactive waste.
