Altra’s experience at Baltic Nuclear Energy Forum 2026

The Altra team is participating in the Baltic Nuclear Energy Forum 2026 in Poland from March 18–20, where they are sharing Lithuania’s experience in radioactive waste management. The knowledge and practical expertise accumulated by the company’s specialists are attracting significant attention from the international nuclear energy community.

During the forum, the Altra team hosted a knowledge-sharing seminar titled “From historical waste retrieval to final disposal: practical lessons from Lithuania’s radioactive waste management programme”, which drew strong interest from nuclear energy experts, regulators, and industry representatives.

This year’s forum theme is “Energy for a Resilient Society”, with a strong focus on energy security, infrastructure resilience, and the role of nuclear energy.

During the seminar, Altra specialists shared practical experience gained from implementing radioactive waste management projects in Lithuania. Participants were introduced to the entire waste management chain – from waste generation to final disposal.

Key seminar topics included:

  • retrieval, sorting and characterisation of historical radioactive waste
  • waste treatment and conditioning processes
  • interim storage solutions
  • development of near-surface repositories in Lithuania for very low level waste and short-lived low and intermediate level waste
  • decommissioning of legacy radioactive waste storage facilities
  • practical lessons learned from implementing complex decommissioning projects

The seminar also presented Lithuania’s progress in strengthening radioactive waste management infrastructure, the regulatory framework, and international cooperation. This experience is attracting increasing interest from countries and organizations planning nuclear energy projects or addressing radioactive waste management challenges.

Participation in such international forums enables the sharing of real project implementation experience and contributes to the development of safe, reliable, and long-term radioactive waste management solutions in Europe.
