Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, operating under the name Altra, is conducting a market survey in order to assess the possibilities for the design, licensing, and dismantling of the remaining equipment of the power plant’s turbine halls. Companies are invited to participate in the market survey and submit preliminary proposals by 2 March, indicating possible dismantling solutions, service costs, and implementation timelines.
The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant has two turbine halls, located in the first and second units of the power plant. All major technological equipment has already been dismantled in these halls, and preparations are currently underway for the removal of the remaining infrastructure, including electrical and ventilation systems, pipelines, metal structures, lifting mechanisms, equipment of primary waste treatment facilities, and other remaining equipment.
The total quantity of remaining equipment amounts to approximately 8,341 tonnes: about 3,707 tonnes in the first unit and about 4,634 tonnes in the second unit. According to radiological classification, it is preliminarily estimated that approximately 3,632 tonnes of dismantled equipment will fall under Class “0” (non-radioactive waste), while approximately 4,709 tonnes will be classified as Class “A” (very low-level short-lived radioactive waste).
The market survey aims to gather preliminary information on the possible costs and timelines of equipment dismantling works across all stages of the project.
The project is expected to consist of three main stages. Stage one will include the preparation of a package of licensing documentation for the dismantling and decontamination of remaining equipment in the turbine halls, as well as the coordination of these documents with regulatory authorities. Stage two will cover the preparation of work execution project(s). Stage three will involve the procurement or manufacture of the equipment and tools required for project implementation, as well as the performance of dismantling works of the remaining equipment in the turbine halls.
The information collected during the market survey will be used to assess possible project implementation scenarios and to plan further actions and procurement procedures related to the implementation of the works.
