The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant introduces a new activity name – Altra – and will now present itself as Lithuania’s nuclear transformation architects. The new name reflects the organisation’s transformation and its long-term mission, built around a vision extending toward the year 2100.
The organisation’s legal name remains unchanged – Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant – however, as CEO Linas Baužys notes, it no longer reflects the true nature of the organisation’s activities. For this reason, a new activity name – Altra – was chosen to embody the company’s long-term vision. Today, Altra not only manages the decommissioning of the former power plant but also lays the foundation for future projects and the next cycle of nuclear energy development in Lithuania.
“The name of the company no longer reflected what we actually do – we have not generated electricity for more than fifteen years, and the plant itself is not located in Ignalina but in Visaginas. Although we remain a nuclear energy organisation, after shutting down the reactors our activities now extend beyond energy into the field of environmental protection. Our primary goal is to ensure that the legacy of nuclear operations is managed safely and sustainably, without negative impact on the environment. This is Lithuania’s largest environmental project in the energy sector, and from now on it is entrusted to Altra,” says Linas Baužys, Head of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, now operating under the Altra activity brand.
According to L. Baužys, the new activity name reflects the organisation’s transformation over recent years: “We have consistently increased operational efficiency, strengthened our corporate governance, and reinforced our accountability to stakeholders. Our goal is to be a modern, transparent and forward-looking state-owned enterprise whose expertise, accumulated over decades, is recognised not only in Lithuania but also within the international nuclear community.”
The new name marks the company’s evolution – a shift from being perceived as a symbol of the past to becoming a long-term, dynamic organisation shaping a vision that extends to the year 2100. “This is an ambition unmatched by any other organisation in Lithuania,” notes L. Baužys.
For many years, while implementing the decommissioning projects of Lithuania’s former nuclear power plant, the organisation was often viewed as one approaching the end of its operations. However, as L. Baužys emphasises, this perception is inaccurate. Shutting down the plant’s reactors did not end Lithuania’s nuclear energy cycle. The country is now in the final stage – waste management – which includes more than one hundred planned projects that will now be implemented under the Altra brand.
The company’s official legal details and documentation remain unchanged, with the name State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant continuing to be used, accompanied by the new symbol and logo – Altra.
What does the name “Altra” mean?
▪️ Alter (Latin) – “other” or “second”; expressing meaningful transformation without becoming something entirely different.
▪️ LT – a reference to Lithuania and our responsibility for its safe and clean future.
▪️ RA – a subtle reference to radioactive waste, the responsible management of which is central to our mission.
Together, these elements form the company’s new positioning statement: Lithuania’s nuclear transformation architects.
The legal name of the State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant remains unchanged; however, the organisation will now operate under its new activity brand – Altra.
